You know you’re an art teacher when...

I was the only art teacher in my K-8 building starting from scratch with no curriculum. Overwhelmed with the volume of kids through my door every day. Always the last car in the lot at night. Then I was asked to add a brand new STEAM class to my schedule and move my entire classroom.

Sound familiar? I’m pretty sure every art teacher has felt like this; over-scheduled and on the cusp of burnout.

“ I believe by supporting art teachers we can develop stronger art programs that contribute to the overall growth of our students and communities.”

I consider myself an organized person. But even I was struggling to simply keep my head above water. I thought the only thing to do was clock a ton of hours outside of school.

When we started a family, everything changed. Sacrificing free time like before simply wasn’t an option. I was determined to leave immediately after school (head down, walking quickly hoping no one would see) and got to work only 30 minutes early (sarcastic emphasis on the “only”) to catch up on email.

I narrowed my focus on a few things in my professional career instead of trying to do it all. And you know what? I’m focused. Less stressed. Happier. Is it still overwhelming at times? Sure. But having a plan makes it work.

Over-scheduling that art teachers face is a detriment to the overall development of the children we serve. It creates teacher burnout. It sends a message of inequity across disciplines. Ultimately, it’s easy to lose sight of our worth because so much is stacked against us.
